Knowledge Base - Stage Race vs Omnium vs Series

Stage Race

  • Definition: A stage race consists of one or more stages scored based on time, culminating in an overall or General Classification (GC) based on the cumulative time of all stages.
  • Format: Typically held over a set number of days with each stage occurring concurrently.
  • Bib Numbers: Each athlete uses the same bib number for the entire event.

Omnium

  • Definition: An omnium is a multi-stage event where each stage can be scored on time or placement, but the overall ranking is determined by a points system.
  • Format: Similar to stage races, omnis are also usually conducted over several days and involve concurrent stages.
  • Bib Numbers: Athletes also use the same bib number throughout the event.

Series

  • Definition: A series is a collection of individually run events spanning multiple dates, which may be organized by the same or different event directors. Scoring is based on athlete placements across the series and referenced against a points table.
  • Format: Each event in the series is conducted separately, rather than concurrently.
  • Bib Numbers: Athletes have different bib numbers for each event. RaceDay Event Software converts these bib numbers to the athletes’ USAC/UCI License numbers, as long as they are included in the event file.

RaceDay Event Software Management

RaceDay Event Software is designed to effectively manage each of these event types. It handles:

  • Stage Races and Omniums by tracking individual stage results and calculating overall standings based on either time or points.
  • Series by managing multiple events, allowing for different bib numbers per event, and maintaining consistent ties to athletes’ licenses for accurate scoring.

This comprehensive functionality ensures efficient event management across varying formats and scoring systems, enhancing the overall experience for athletes and organizers alike.

For Series, if all events are using RaceDay Event Software, you can use the Series download option under Utilities Dropdown, if not you can use the Series header excel document in the Useful Forms download
